Thanks for sharing. I know understand why my dog does not want to sit at times.
And like what you mentioned, it is better to combine the Sit and Stay command together.
Otherwise, the dog may get confused at times. 🙂

My “Cherry” is nearly 2 months old now. Had the first ever two sessions with her today. She was giving me sits fairly quickly. Followed me a bit once I called her and then immediately sat down and looked at me for a treat.
I want to understand the importance of the “lure hand” as you’ve mentioned it.
Will be MUCH OBLIGED to have you reply.

Hi Julia, with puppies, we spend so much time training that it is really important to deduct the food used in training from the daily food allowance. I suggest you put his rations in a pot or bowl as soon as he has finished the last meal. Take food from the bowl for training treats and only give him what is left in the bowl at the next meal time

your tips are very helpful! I really appreciate them!
I’m currently in Stage 1 with a fairly responsive 4-month puppy that has been with me for a little over a week. After one session in Stage 1, he’s already offering me sits all the time and I am worried I’m giving him too much food as rewards. Is it possible to just pet him when he offers me sits out of trainings and leave food rewards for trainings?

Thank you so much for the advice!

Thank you so much for your wonderful site! I’m so excited because I’m bringing a four-month old shelter chocolate lab home tomorrow. He is such a wonderful dog, and I’m a nervous new Dad because I want to make sure everything is right for him. The shelter people didn’t know his back story, but he had gotten there the very same day that I arrived, so I’m glad he’s not going to be there that long.

Besides using your checklists for supplies and such, can you suggest a good “first days with puppy” outline? Thanks again and cheers from the other side of the pond. (I’ll be getting a “Lab Dad” t-shirt on Amazon 😀 )

I have two labs. They are 2 months old. I’m training them separately. One male and one female. The female although has learned the sit and stay command but just chooses not to listen to me in the presence of the male. Although he listens and follows every time. Any tips on how to change the way I’m training her ?

I’m 15 and she has started to only listen to me, I’m training her to sit/stay and not bite but my sister is reversing this training. Any tips on how to get her to listen to other people or is it best for her to listen to me?
Thanks!

Hi Josh, at one month (four weeks) labrador puppies need to be with their mother and litter mates. When your puppy is old enough to leave his mum at eight weeks old, then you can start to think about training him. Start with some very simple skills like this one http://totallydogtraining.com/teach-your-dog-to-target-your-hand/ and get yourself a good book on clicker training like this one http://totallydogtraining.com/clicker-training-for-dogs-by-karen-pryor/ Good luck with your puppy, read and learn as much as you can, and be patient with him. 🙂
