Thank you for asking this! Our lab will be 6 years old in January. And she goes to daycare and plays there but at home when I’m trying to work she wants me to play. But I’m afraid she’d hate a sibling because she us the only child and the queen of this house. Lol.

I am 74 and couldn’t cope with a boisterous new puppy, but I am certainly fit enough to go for hour long walks etc. I have a garden and live in a rural area with lots of lovely woodland and beach walks. I am thinking of adopting a lab of say 3, 4, 5 or 6 years old as a friend for my lab. I was thinking if adopting an ex guide dog but they would be already 8 years so I would prefer a slightly younger dog to boost my boys energy. Could you advise me of the best age and the best way to find his playmate?

Hi Rob – with the right management this age gap can work well. There are some tips here for helping things go smoothly 🙂 thelabradorsite.com/introducing-puppy-to-older-dog/

We are thinking of getting another lab puppy. I’m concerned that that’s too much of an age gap. Also, she has been the queen here for her whole life. I don’t want her to feel bad about sharing her parents with a puppy. Any thoughts?

Fortunately it is going well so far – the older one is still very active (not quite as active as the pup) and puppy is learning from him every day. I am lucky that we have other family dogs closer in age to puppy so she has playmates for the rough and tumble and a calm old dog to teach her that the world isn’t too scary! It’s hard work managing the very different needs of a geriatric and a juvenile – routine is a big part of that. And the puppy loves her crate so that’s a bonus

I might have waited too much but it just wasn’t my moment before. Fortunately it worked out really well, they don’t play rough and my older one is super patient with the pup (11mo now…) who sometimes is a bit of handful…
But fortunately is just going well

Age gaps have been 3-4 years. Older English Labs have always been great mentors. Really eliminated “house training” and a lot of “basic training” type skills. 4 Labs over 30+ years. Loss of the older dog has not been a notable issue although the survivor def. picked up on everyones’ saddness.

We have a 1 year old female chocolate lab.
We want to get her a half sister (same mom different dad). She would be 1.5 years old when the second arrives. Our first is very social and plays well with many dogs both girls and boys. I have heard both views on girls not getting along while others they are fine.
I’d prefer another girl but would like feedback!

We sadly lost our old girl a few days ago (almost 12) and the pups miss her but they have each other for company which is great. I wouldn’t suggest to anyone who doesn’t have a lot of dog experience to get litter sisters, it is a lot of hard work and dedication, even teaching them their names can be hard work as I’m pretty sure for the first 6 months they both thought their names were ‘Lexi, Ruby!’.
