I am currently researching the different types of Labs, prior to hopefully purchasing one in the next year or so. I’m not an expert. In fact, the main exposure I’ve had to labs were my fiancé’s guide dogs, who were both English labs. The first one he had when we started dating, Urban, changed my mind about Labs – I freely admit I thought they were some of the least intelligent dogs I had seen or been around. Well, Urban changed my mind after he had come home from the guide dog school. About 6 weeks later, He alerted my fiancé that I was in medical distress. Not trained for it, and he wasn’t my dog, but he knew something was wrong. I don’t remember much, as being born with hydrocephalus, and have had an inter cranial shunt since I was six weeks old…. I generally know the symptoms of a shunt block – partial or full. However, as I got older, I stopped displaying the “text book” symptoms. I just remember having the mother of all headaches, and stumbling to the bedroom. I was in such pain, I just made it to the bed… I think Urban took my wrist at some point, but I don’t remember clearly… when I finally regained consciousness, I was in the emergency department of my local hospital, with a very protective Lab sitting by the bed, and giving medical staff the “Stink-eye” as we call it. Turned out, after I passed out, Urban went to get my fiancé – who promptly called the paramedics. They told us later that if Urban hadn’t been there, I probably would have developed a full blown block, and probably would have needed another major surgery. I have already had 14 of them, and was extremely grateful to avoid another one. After my fiancé passed away unexpectedly last year, I have been struggling with extreme loneliness and everything else that goes along with a loss like that. Animals have always brought me joy in my life, but particularly dogs.

I have had American Labs to hunt with, family dogs and trial dogs for 40 years. They are ATHELIETIC AND NEVER REFUSE TO PLEASE! EASY TO TRAIN FROM GUN DOGS, TRIAL DOGS, AND SERVICE DOGS , I AM PROUD TO SAY! NEVER A DISAPPOINTMENT!

I’ve owned 3 labs. 2 English Show type and 1 more agile and slender but with a lot of muscle definition. Sometimes I love to watch (Sassy, the working type) her because she is true balance with a lot of drive and strong desire to please. All 3 were and are reactive. Lots of training, hard work and apologies. I understand these guys so much better after reading this article. Thank you!

One named Odin ended up having hip and elbow problems and had to be put down at 12 years old. He was wicked smart though. Our newest lab was born the day Odin was put down. His name is Buddy and it fits him to a tee. He loves everyone!! We had to send him to a trainer for two months of obedience BOOT CAMP to stop the Jumping and pulling. It has been hard being without him but having just seen him, I can say without a doubt that Raney Ranch Labradors in the San Diego area are great Trainers. He is much improved!!! While Buddy shows 0% Interest in Field work, His interest in people will be put to work as a dog visiting patients in the hospital my wife works in.
