Hi Rebecca, this sounds really hard for you. To avoid consistently rewarding barking with treats, we suggest streaming the treats to her so fast that each treat reaches her before she’s started the next bark! And then space them out over time. If that doesn’t help, then it may be time to consider getting in person advice from a professional canine behaviourist, who can help you make a personalised plan to improve things.

Got her at 14wks . Reactive to strangers and dogs almost from day 1. We have solved the dogs issue with counter conditioning & de sensitising and she is better with the stranger that owns them if they have a dog! We can pass strangers in the street as long as they leave her alone. However , any interaction or if I’m static is a problem but the biggest issue is strangers in the house . If we’ve been on a walk with them she’s 75-100% better (esp if they have a dog). She just barks and barks and barks Z. Obvs we can’t just avoid people coming in (decorator next week!) and it’s impossible to get distance . I also fear as a very foody lab that the CC in this scenarios is ‘feeding’ the behaviour a bit (she can demand bark for other stuff but it’s a v diff bark and we ignore ). My gut tells me we have to be careful with the positive treats pairing with the negative in this situation (I think she’s got worse) and also struggling on how to manage it in the meantime . We can’t have people to th house and my kids can’t have friends over unless we’ve been on a walk first !

Hi Traci, sorry to hear you’re having difficulties. This all sounds very frustrating for you. I suggest popping over to join us at thelabradorforum.com where you’ll find lots of helpful articles and links to get you started, and will be able to connect with other lab owners to share tips, too. We’d love to see you there.
Sammie

She also attempts to nip and growls if family is hugging or playing. I am in fear that she might actually hurt someone. I don’t have the thousands of dollars for dog training, so is there a good book to get for training or any advice???

We rehomed a ten month old lab about a month ago. He’s great and has learnt so much in a short time. The one thing I’m concerned about (other than his love of eating poo!!) is barking when he’s alone. As we’ve been in lockdown we’ve been conscious to try and give him short periods on his own so it’s not a big shock later. We leave him in his crate which he usually is very happy in. He chooses to sleep there during the day with the door open and happily goes in at night and sleeps quietly until morning. We live on a small holding and he happily wanders the land on his own. When we’re here, although he likes being with us he doesn’t always need to be in the same room as us so I’m not sure it’s separation anxiety. When we leave we give him a kong which keeps him entertained for about ten minutes then he lays down and appears calm in his manner but he barks regularly. Sometimes it’s for a few minutes then he’ll have a sleep and then wake up and bark again other times he’ll bark on and off until we return (max twenty mins at the moment unless he’s asleep – we have a camera to watch him). I’m not worried about the actual barking as we have no neighbours just what it is doing to him in terms of anxiety etc or is it just boredom and how can we help and get to leave him for longer periods? Thank you

We cannot get a wink of sleep. He sleeps outside in his pin with our 6 year old lab/cross also. So I don’t think it’s loneliness as this is only a recent thing. I’m not sure is it the stillness Of The night or what but I don’t want to become a habit. He’s too energetic to bring in, we’ve tried that! Note: we live in the country. Can you please advise a solution to try? Thanks in advance. Michelle

My 14month old lab is the same way. We do not have any little kids in the family, all adults. So she has never been around them. But when we are out walking she’s the same way.
Hopefully someone can help us?!?!

Would you believe me if i said i have the exact opposite problem? I have been on this page since before getting my lab puppy, in order to understand what to expect. Different breeds = different behaviors.

I cant get my dog to bark….for anything!! Please help me!! I adopted her when she was 3 months, shes now 10.5months old. Any advice would help . I am desperate to get her to “speak”. All she does is let out a high pitch whine. Id rather hear a bark than that whine. PLEASE help me!
