How high should the walls be to keep the pups in til they are 8 weeks old, but allow the mom to go in and out? Thank you

After a brief wander around the kitchen, she went into the crate of her own accord and fell asleep.
Over the past month she has been in it several times a day, sometimes with the door open, sometimes closed, and uses it as her own personal space, sleeping well at night. She also travels in an Ellie Bo sloping crate in the car.
Having never used a crate for our dogs before, I am now a total convert.

We have a golden retriever who’s coming up on a year and a half and is a mischievous little chewer. I like the look of the wooden crates / metal cages with wood covers from your article (we have a lot of wooden furniture they would go with) but reading the critical reviews from Amazon, I’m not sure of the quality. Do you have any personal experience with any of them? As we live in Singapore, I don’t want to risk ordering it and then not being able to return it if it doesn’t work out.

Thanks.

Hi Emma, congrats on getting a new pup!
We , personally did not have a crate, instead we had been using a pen up until yesterday. Our girl just turned a year on Dec 18th, so it had been sitting in our living room for almost a year. I’m so happy that we’ve chosen that option. Lab pups as you probably know ,are quite a chewers, especially the first year. So the bottom line: if you want to prevent your house from destruction get a metal play pen. You can confine your puppy in there when left unattended. Also, do not get an expensive bedding as it’ll be in pieces in no time ( most likely..)
Good luck:)

We are getting our pup next week and I need to buy a crate. Is the large Ellie-bo still the one that you would recommend? Our pup is from working lines so she will probably be a bit smaller.

Thanks

Emma

PS: I think this website is fantastic – and we haven’t even got the pup yet!

Have a look at our house training article Justine, it will help you decide whether or not you want to crate train your puppy – if you do, then you’ll need to buy a crate. https://www.thelabradorsite.com/house-training-your-labrador-puppy/

Is it advisable to get a crate as well so she knows her bed area and feels comfortable? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Hi Grace, The side door is there to make the crate fit in the required space, so I am sure that it will be absolutely fine to use instead as long as your Labrador can comfortably walk in and out of it. Best wishes, Lucy.

We are looking at purchasing a crate for our Labrador, but the most suitable place for it in our house would be somewhere that would render it only accessible from the shorter side (ie via the smaller door). Is this something you wouldn’t recommend?

Thank you for your help.
