Sorry for your loss and the negligence of your vet.

I am so sorry for your loss, it was not your fault, there was no reason you should have known. Wishing you and your family all the best, and I’m so sorry you went through this.

He was completely normal when I left for work and a few hours later my husband called and said something wasn’t right, that Duke’s stomach was all bloated and he was just lying there and not wanting to go for a ride or even get up. When he took him outside Duke just wanted to be away from my husband. He had to lift him in and out of the truck when we finally got in touch with a vet that had time to look at him but by then it was too late. They said that is stomach had filled up with blood but there was no testing or anything done that would’ve led them to say that and he was perfectly fine at 8 that morning but by 4 that afternoon me, my husband, our daughter, and our 5 year old red lab all held Duke while he took his last breath. I can’t help but wonder if we’d have gotten him in before noon whether they’d have been able to save him. My heart is still broken and I feel like I should have done more and acted quicker but I had never heard of this before until reading this article.

I wish his vet and/or breeder had warned me about GDV in Labs and what the symptoms are. I would have been on top of things quicker and it may have made a difference in saving him 🙁 It is a crushing loss for our family.

Any thoughts on this or has anyone done this? We’ve had no bloat that we’re aware of thank God.

We fed her nothing but dry food since we got her as a puppy. The morning she passed, we fed her a normal breakfast of dry food, which we measure. Around late morning, she threw-up in the kitchen and I noticed her food from that morning was still whole, it had never been digested. I let her outside, cleaned up everything, but she wouldn’t come back in. About an hour or so later, my son came home and I asked him to try and coax her back inside. He said she wouldn’t lift her head, he couldn’t get her to move. I called our Vet, who said to bring her in. We did, and they took her to the back. Crying while we waited, one of the assistants came to call us to the back and said she was in cardiac arrest and wasn’t going to make it. The Vet told us he could have repaired her twisted stomach surgically, but there was a 99% chance it would happen again. That was 12 years ago.

Our first lab was a chocolate female. She died at 2.5 years old from either an epileptic or diabetic seizure. We had her autopsied. The Vet said it was genetic and comes from in-breeding. Our yellow lab’s parents didn’t know each other, they came from different states.

Tomorrow we pick up our 3rd lab . . a chocolate female puppy. Fingers crossed, we are blessed with a miracle this time.

Dropped him off Saturday morning, they called us Tuesday afternoon to tell us he was gone. When we dropped him off he was happy, healthy and completely fine- this just doesn’t seem right.

I lost my 12 year old this morning in almost the same exact scenario…He woke me up around 5am wanting to go out, once outside he dry heaved multiple times got real unsteady on his feet and just gazed off all crazy like…I was able to get him back asleep and at 7am I noticed his abdomen was distended and at this point he could barley stand…he died at the vet a few minutes after 8am while they did a needle decompression to try and stabilize him for surgery…..perfectly healthy dog, ate at 7pm short walk at 9pm and sleep rest of the night…absolutely heart broken…we did nothing different that night than the previous 12 years…just a freak occurrence

I had consulted to the Vet right away but all she did was do fecal test and have my 2 months old puppy take Nematocide. She never did X-Ray with my dog or anything. After reading this article, it leaves me so much accountability and little did I know that this was already a critical case for my dog! What hurts me most is that I can no longer reverse time back and fix this. 🙁

We love you Potchi. RIP. June 2019 – August 2019
