Amen, amen!! It is beyond me why a “breeder” who’s supposedly best interest is to better the breed, would go totally against the Labrador breed standards and breed these dilute “Labradors.” If it truly is a good, reputable breeder, they would stick with the breed standards and work towards improving the breed.

You dont need a bad list of breeders you need to to develop the skills knowledge and experience to know what a good breeder looks like.

Why would they be ? I have bred puppies for over a decade. It is often the best puppies left till last because many buyers havent a clue and go for looks. You wouldnt expect people pickign a baby for adoption to know what the baby will grow up to be so why would you imagine puppy buyers have a clue about what a puppy will grow up to be and thus – pick the best ones first ! Look at the puppies parents and the environment they have been raised in.

So you didn’t do your research, got shafted by a terrible breeder and whose fault is it ? Hips and eyes are a red herring. As a buyer you are better focussing your attention on the Breeder and the dogs they have used to produce the litter you are looking at. To be fair, it is a minefield out there with a majority of websites churning out the work of others and written by people who, to experienced dog breeders and owners, don’t have a clue. You can now check a UK Kennel Club registered do on the KC website, and then follow that dogs ancestry and recorded by the KC health information. But none of this ensures your breeder has fed the puppies a quality food, enriched their lives and otherwise reared them in a good environment. Good litters go fast but so do terrible ones so be prepared to travel at short notice to see a litter from 4 weeks and put down a deposit in cash with a documented receipt if everything checks out. Dont expect a good breeder with quality puppies to sell them to people that cant be bothered to do basic due diligence and ask stupid questions like how tall will the dog be when you should be enquiring about the breeders experience, the parents, the way the puppies are raised and where. Ask for references, ask to see pedigree papers and look into good quality whole of life insurance.

I expressed my wish to view the puppies and pick, I was told that the pups would be handed out as the other purchasers were too far away to view them but as I lived closer it was ok to visit. I planned to visit when they were 6 weeks old. The seller has sent videos and pics of the puppies twice a week. She said she would have a group for all the prospective new owners but all correspondence (pics) were just for me. I understood I was getting first choice. She contacted me to say people were coming to view when they were 3 weeks old – I said I felt that was too early and was unable to go that day so I arranged to go even earlier . 3 days before I was due to go she contacted me to say I would have a choice of 2 pups (the original agreement was choice of 6). I told her I was not happy about that and asked about getting my money back. Within minutes she came back saying I could have my choice of 4. We went and picked one though it was far too early. Saw the parents who are lovely dogs and asked to see the KC registration. Stupidly ( naively) I assumed that all health checks on parents was done as they were KC tegisteted. A few days later I contacted the seller asking me to show me the health check details only to learn that they hadn’t been done. She told me her vet would only do hip/ elbow scores once they were 2 – dogs were 28 months and the pregnancy had been an “accident “. She would not give me vet details. I said I couldn’t proceed without the health checks including eyes, dna etc. I asked for my deposit of £300 back and she has refused. She considers that her dogs are good healthy dogs and there will be no problem with the pups. Her overall charge per pup is £2000. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this.
I found this article extremely informative and useful , thank you

Should a red flag go up if a breeder has just 2 pups left both 10 weeks old…….a little older than normal to let go? Buying a pup unseen..can someone expand on these murky waters?

Dan
